A website that takes five seconds to load doesn't feel broken to its owner — they visit it from an office computer that's cached everything, and it seems fine. To a first-time visitor on a phone, it's a different site: a blank screen, a spinner, and a decision forming — is this business worth the wait?
For most of them the answer is no. Research consistently shows a large share of mobile visitors abandon pages that take more than about three seconds. They don't complain. They tap back and choose the next result — often a competitor.
Speed is a trust signal
For high-trust businesses — medical, legal, financial — speed isn't only about patience. A researcher deciding on a doctor or a lawyer is reading credibility signals from the first second, and a slow, janky load reads the same way a shabby waiting room does. Fast and stable reads as competent before a single word is read.
Speed is also a ranking input
Google measures real-user experience through Core Web Vitals — how fast the main content appears (LCP), how stable the layout is while loading (CLS), and how quickly the page responds to input (INP). These feed rankings directly, and they gate everything else: the best content on a slow page is fighting uphill.
There's a compounding effect too. If you ever run ads, a slow landing page raises your cost per lead — you paid for the click and lost the visitor before the page appeared.
What the scores mean
Run any page through Google's free PageSpeed Insights and you'll get a 0–100 score. Read it honestly:
- 90+ — genuinely fast. Most agency sites don't hit this on mobile.
- 70–89 — decent, with real money left on the table.
- Below 50 — you're losing a meaningful share of mobile visitors before the page renders.
Test your site, not your memory of it — and test the mobile score, because that's where most first visits happen.
What actually makes sites fast
Having tuned our own site from a mobile score of 50 to the mid-90s, we can tell you where the weight really hides:
- Oversized images — the #1 culprit everywhere. Multi-megabyte photos scaled down in the browser. Modern formats (WebP) at the right dimensions routinely cut image weight 80–90%.
- Video that loads whether or not it's watched — a background video downloading megabytes on a phone that never plays it.
- JavaScript-gated content — pages that render nothing until a script wakes up. If your headline waits for JavaScript, your visitors wait too.
- Bloated builders and plugins — page builders that ship hundreds of kilobytes of code to draw a simple page.
- No caching or compression — fixable in an afternoon, often never configured.
